Our Equity Journey
We believe health equity is vital and achievable.
In the past, health equity was a desired outcome of our work – today, equity is at the center of our strategy, influencing both our investments and how we do our work. We are focused on the areas of greatest need in our communities.
Over the last five years, the Cambia Health Foundation has philanthropically invested more than $15M to work towards an equitable society and to eliminate health disparities. We have made progress, but there is so much more to do. We are committed to listening, learning and acting to address discrimination and prejudice and transform health care through our philanthropy. We will challenge ourselves and not shy away from being uncomfortable as we commit to our own role and responsibility to create lasting change.
We are committed to Foundation staff growth and skill development in diversity, equity and inclusion. In 2021 our team participated in a six-month virtual training called Reframing Racism: Language and Tools for Advancing Equity. Facilitated by the Center for Equity and Inclusion (CEI). Additionally, the Foundation currently has representation in The Race Equity Culture™ Fellowship program, a new 10-month peer cohort program for racial equity and DEI leaders in grantmaking organizations. The fellowship is designed and led by a partnership between Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) and Equity In The Center®.

Each funding opportunity will have its own application process and timeframe. This information is often communicated in a request for proposal (RFP) document and/or a Call for Applications. All applications are submitted through an online application system. Instructions for submitting applications will be provided for each funding opportunity.
Cambia Health Foundation currently accepts applications from organizations that have received their 501(c)(3) nonprofit and tax-exempt status or 509(a) 1, 2, or 3 (types I, II, or a functionally integrated type III) designation under the Internal Revenue Service Code (IRC); Accredited schools or universities; Units of government and public agencies; federally recognized Indian Tribal Entities.
Cambia Health Foundation partners with organizations that value diversity and work to create an inclusive culture.
As a condition of receiving funds, we will ask all organizations to certify they do not discriminate in any aspect of business operations on the basis of age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, political affiliation, religious belief, and any other status protected by law.
We regard a certification of nondiscrimination as one aspect of an organization’s commitment to diversity and creating a culture of inclusion. Beyond adherence to nondiscrimination policies, each organization is on their own journey of learning how best to realize these goals. Cambia Health Foundation is also committed to these practices for our organization. We value learning alongside our grantees and community partners as we consider and make our investments.
No, we currently only fund people and projects in the United States. Our investments in Sojourns and the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program are focused nationally.

Do you make other investments in palliative care outside of the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program?

We support models that address health disparities by considering access to housing, healthy food, transportation, and other social determinants of health as part of the care model. Other determinants include integrating prevention-focused physical, behavioral and oral health care services into a seamless experience that reduces costs and improves quality.
Any charitable not-for-profit organization, including federally recognized Indian tribes, in the continental United States are eligible to apply. Currently, we give preference to organizations whose services will be delivered in Idaho, Oregon, Utah and/or Washington.
Our grantees are working to provide people with the ability to actively engage in their health, inspiring and enabling them to live their best lives.
Yes. Cambia Health Foundation has a policy that caps institutionally charged indirect costs for a grant at 10 percent per year.
